Our Stoves

Our Range of Stoves

Salamander Stoves began with the creation of our Hobbit stove – a compact, efficient and high-quality multi-fuel stove, which is one of the smallest cast iron stoves that you can buy. The Hobbit was originally designed for small household fireplaces, to avoid having to remove original Victorian and Edwardian tiles or cast iron fire surrounds. However, due to the small space revolution of the last decade, our little wood stove has found its home in a huge range of incredible small spaces, from cabins to canal boats, caravans and camper vans, tiny homes, shepherds’ huts, horse boxes and more!

Following the success of our Hobbit stove and the great feedback that we’ve received, we have developed a second small stove – The Little Range! This tiny cook stove is perfect for a diverse array of small spaces, and it has a much larger cooktop as well as a built-in oven. Whether you’re looking to heat a small space, power a hot water supply, or if you want to get stuck into some wood-fired cooking, our Little Range Cook Stove will make a fantastic addition to your household fireplace, an off-grid cabin, or any other form of tiny home or dwelling!

You can visit our flue kit section below to read more about our bespoke flue consultancy service. Here, you can also browse our extensive range of installation kits that we have designed, as well as a wide range of extra flue parts for your small stove. We also offer a number of accessories and additional options for your tiny wood burner! If you would like to purchase any spare parts for your small stove, or if you want to give it a new look with a fresh coat of paint, then we also stock a variety of products by Vitcas and Calfire to prolong the life of your small wood burning stove.

FAQ's

  • How much is a small wood burning stove?

The cost of your small wood burning stove will depend on the unique specifics of your space, as well as the stove that you choose, and what stove extras you decide to add.

However, investing in a small wood burning stove for your home comes at a fraction of the cost of other alternatives, such as underfloor heating and central heating. Our small wood burning stoves are also visually appealing, and they offer the perfect blend of traditional and more contemporary styling. Our small stoves will make a lovely focal point for your space – whether that be a house, a van conversion, or any other small space.

You may need to purchase a flue kit for your stove if you don’t already have the necessary flue parts in place. If you’re not sure what flue parts you might need, then please do not hesitate to contact us.

  • How to install a small wood burning stove?

The installation of your small wood burning stove will largely depend on the specifications of the structure that you are looking to install the stove into, as well as what stove you decide to purchase, and how you would like it to be set up. Saying that, our small wood burning stoves are easy to install, especially with the extensive range of installation kits that we have designed.

We also offer a wide range of stove extras, and you can choose to have your stove painted in a variety of colours, so you can tailor your wood burner to whatever suits you and your space best.

If you have any questions regarding how you can install one of our stoves, then please feel free to contact us. You can also enter your postcode into our authorised dealers page to find your nearest recommended installer.

  • Will a small stove provide much heat?

Despite their small stature, our small stoves have been heating homes and unique spaces for years, and they can provide a great level of heat.

Our Hobbit stove has an output of 4.1kW, but this is the nominal output. For example, the Hobbit SE has a mean low output of 3kW, and a mean high output of 5.6kW, so this is the sort of range that you can expect from the appliance. On the other hand, our Little Range Cook Stove has a nominal output of 4.3kW.

  • Are your stoves fuel efficient?

Yes, our stoves are very fuel efficient. The Hobbit Eco small stove at Salamander Stoves is a small cast iron multi-fuel stove that can burn wood, coal, or eco logs. Our Hobbit stove fully complies with the 2022 Eco Design regulations, and it features an improved centre grate for better multi-fuel capability.

To meet the 2022 Eco Design regulations, Salamander Stoves have also increased the efficiency of our small multi-fuel stoves to over 81%, and we have reduced the particulate and gas emissions. The Hobbit SE has also passed the HETAS Cleaner Choice Scheme.

  • What is the best small wood burning stove?

The Hobbit stove at Salamander Stoves may be compact in size, but not in power! Our stoves are ideal for heating small, unique spaces where traditional stoves won’t fit. Our stoves are available as our standard version or the SE, which is the DEFRA exempt model that you will need if you live in a Smoke Control Area.

Our stoves fully comply with the 2022 Eco Design regulations, boasting efficiency ratings of 81.4%. The Hobbit stove and the Hobbit SE have a 4.1kW output of efficient, clean burning heat for your space. The Hobbit SE has also passed the HETAS Cleaner Choice Scheme.

  • How to light a small wood burning stove?

The “top-down” approach is the most environmentally-friendly way to start a fire in your small stove. To do so, a fire is lit on top of the firewood inside the burning chamber. As the fire spreads and ignites, the gases will be burnt off before they exit through the chimney.

When you go to light your stove, it’s best if you keep the fires as small as possible for the first few times. Doing so will allow the paint to cure before you light larger fires in your small wood burner.

Before you start using your stove, there are also a few different things you should think about…

    • The air control settings, lighting methods and firing intervals will vary depending on the chimney draw, wind direction, climatic conditions and heating requirements, as well as the fuel being used. As a result, it may take a little while before you are completely familiar with how to operate your stove correctly.
    • Never use wet or green wood in your small stove. Wood should be stored under cover for at least one to two years and should be exposed to the air. Wood should also be chopped as soon as possible after felling.
    • Driftwood has a high salt content and should never be burned in your stove. This will damage both the stove and the chimney. You should also never burn impregnated wood, laminate, or chipboard, as these materials can emit harmful gases and fumes when burnt.

For more information about using your small stove from Salamander Stoves, please refer to our instruction manuals. You can also click here to watch a helpful how-to video.

  • What is your most efficient stove?

The most efficient stove at Salamander Stoves is our Little Range Cook Stove, a small cast iron multi-fuel stove. Able to burn wood, coal, or eco logs with energy efficiency ratings of over 85%, our Little Range Cook Stove fully complies with the 2022 Eco Design regulations, and it comes with a 7-year warranty when you register your stove with us.

  • How powerful are small stoves?

The small stoves at Salamander Stoves are certainly powerful despite their size! Our Hobbit Eco stove boasts efficiency ratings of 81.4% and can provide 4.1kW of efficient, clean burning heat for your space.

This is the nominal output. For example, the Hobbit SE has a mean low output of 3kW, and a mean high output of 5.6kW, so this is the type of range that you can expect from the appliance.

Our Hobbit Stove Has Been Fitted!

"We had a Hobbit stove fitted this week by Alex Reay from Flues and Fires, and I just wanted to get in touch to say it is AMAZING and we love it! We have a lovely cast iron tiled fireplace which I was desperate not to lose when we installed a small wood burning stove, but until I found the Hobbit on Google, everyone told me it would be impossible to keep the fire surround. The Hobbit is perfect - not only does it fit very snugly, but it looks fantastic and the blue door complements the tiles very nicely. We are sitting enjoying a fire now and absolutely loving it! Thanks for creating such an amazing product."

The Best Stove Ever!

"It’s the best stove ever! It’s easy to light, very efficient, burns anthracite and stays in overnight (ours has been in for three weeks now). It even keeps a kettle of water at the ready for a cuppa! What more can I say, we love it! Just the thing to make our Yorkshire home cosy, and the cat loves it too!"

First Small Stove Installation

Was looking for a small stove for my first self-install. Found Mark very helpful. Knowledgeable, friendly service. Stove burns well and generates lots more heat than the previous open fire. What is not to like?

A Huge Thank You!

"Dear Mark and Gill, a huge thank you for designing and making the Hobbit stove! We had two different London-based fireplace companies tell us that we simply had to knock out the old cast iron and tile fireplace to fit in a woodburning stove, and that there was no other option! Then we found you online. We are delighted with our little Hobbit, which swallows up logs and kicks out a good amount of heat. Perfect for the winter! I will also be writing to the London-based fireplace companies to put the Hobbit on their radar. Best wishes."

The Little Hobbit Has Stepped Up To The Challenge!

"We just wanted to say how impressed and how much of a life saver our little Hobbit has been! It was fitted a few months ago in our holiday home in Rhu, Scotland, which is a large open plan conversion in a Victorian house. This weekend our boiler decided it was not going to play ball. The little Hobbit has stepped up to the challenge, providing heat to a very large area, about twenty eight foot by twenty four foot with a high ceiling of about eighteen foot, keeping the room reasonably warm, warm enough for us not to use cardigans!”

Our Pride And Joy!

Fantastic!

"Just to bid you all a Happy New Year and to say how much we’re enjoying having our Hobbit stove! It was easy to fit with the help of your excellent ‘how to’ videos and we’re just awaiting our inspection by building control for the certification. The Hobbit has fitted neatly into the hearth vacated by the old gas back boiler (with a little cosmetic rendering) and never ceases to surprise us how much heat it can deliver to the point that the new condenser boiler is having an easy life, thereby saving us on gas bills too! Everyone loves having a ‘real fire’ in the living room."
