Cabiner
Cabiner is a network of hiking routes and off-grid cabins at the most beautiful places in Dutch nature.
In June 2014, co-founders Sander and Vincent were hiking with a group of friends on a desolated island above the Arctic Circle. They spent a night in wooden cabin, surrounded by nature and simplicity. The feeling of freedom, connectedness to the earth and adventure sparked the idea which was the beginning of Cabiner – to create off-grid cabins, in nature with a minimalist touch. Connecting people and nature was their main focus from day one.
Cabiner is now made up of 24 off-grid cabins in the middle of nature in the Netherlands. For Sander and Vincent, their dream was to connect hiking trails and cabins, making them only accessible by foot. This not only connects people with nature, but a greater the contribution to the development of nature reserves.
Each Cabiner cabin is innovative and completely self-sufficient, and blends in perfectly with its surroundings. The cabin is made by wrapping over twenty layers of cardboard around a mould. This creates a sturdy and at the same time light frame. This is wrapped again, this time with a waterproof membrane, with wooden panelling on top. The inside is also made entirely of wood, which means that the visitor is still connected to the outside world inside the cabin, and glass front of the cabin reflect the surroundings. Cabiner are also making a positive impact on the environment by supporting nature projects, only leaving footprints behind and involving the local community.
We are so proud to say that all of the 24 cabins have a small Salamander Stove in! Our little stove is the central point to the cabin, providing warmth, hot water and a space to cook. With an off-grid cabin like these, having a wood burning stove is essential to make everything run smoothly and to fully enjoy your time there, as no one likes being cold!
