Our Hobbit stove was originally designed to fit small household fireplaces where larger stoves simply would not fit. The Hobbit can be installed without the need to remove any traditional Victorian and Edwardian tiles or ornate cast iron fire surrounds. By fitting one of our Hobbit stoves, you can keep these traditional features and preserve the heritage of your fireplace, whilst also avoiding a lot of complicated and expensive renovation work which would be required to install a larger stove! Our household fireplace flue kits make the installation process even easier, so you can sit back with your feet up and enjoy a hot cup of tea on your small stove whilst you admire your fireplace!
Do I need to use a flexible chimney liner, or can I use the existing chimney?
The vast majority of chimneys are not in a good enough condition to use, and will require lining with a flexible 316 grade stainless steel chimney liner. Incorporating a flue liner will greatly improve the flue draw, efficiency and performance of your stove, whilst also minimising the build up of deposits that could potentially occur in an unlined chimney. Our Chimney Lining Kit contains everything that you will need to fit your small stove into an existing masonry chimney, and it includes a 316 grade stainless steel flexible chimney liner that you can line your chimney with. You can choose what length of single wall flue you need, and you can also select a specific length of flexible liner. We also offer an Existing Chimney Kit if you are not looking to purchase a length of flexible liner. This kit contains everything that you will need to install your small stove into an existing masonry chimney, and you can also select what length of single wall flue pipe you need.
Our Hobbit stove has been installed in countless small fireplaces, and you can see how other people have incorporated our small multi-fuel stove into the design of their fireplace by taking a look through some of our testimonials and case studies.

Should I insulate my chimney liner?
Ideally, yes. Insulating the liner will retain much more heat inside the flue pipe, which will improve the draw and performance of your stove, as well as reducing the formation of deposits. However, insulating a flexible liner will require the removal of the chimney pot, and therefore this is not undertaken very often. If your chimney is on a north facing gable end then insulating the liner would be a sensible plan, but if the chimney is located inside the house rather than on an outside wall, then insulating the liner is not really required.
Some extra advice!
Approximately 75-80% of the heat produced by an open fire is taken up the flue pipe, and as a consequence, soot deposits and tar residue are reduced. However, if you have a wood burner installed, then the majority of the heat is retained by the stove and radiated out into the room. Therefore, the flue gases from a wood burner are much colder, and will leave more soot and tar deposits. Installing a 316 grade stainless steel flexible chimney liner reduces the volume of air that the flue gases will pass through, and this helps the flue gases to retain their heat. The very smooth inner surface of the chimney liner also prevents the build up of soot, as this falls back into the stove where it is burnt.
We would still recommend you to get your chimney inspected and swept once a year at a minimum. The amount of soot and tar that gets produced is also affected by the quality and dryness of the fuel that you use, and the rate at which this fuel is burnt. Slow burning of damp wood will soot and tar a chimney or chimney lining much more rapidly than burning good dry wood at the stoves optimum burn rate. Before installing any new wood stove into an existing chimney, we would advise you to contact your local chimney sweep to get the chimney swept and inspected.
