The Hobbit SE is a small cast iron multi-fuel stove that is able to burn wood, coal, or eco logs, and it fully complies with the new Eco Design 2022 regulations, which makes it suitable for any installations after the 1st January 2022. Our Hobbit SE is specifically designed for installations where the space for a stove might be more limited, and this makes our stove the ideal choice for small fireplaces where larger stoves simply won’t fit.

The Hobbit stove is available either as a standard version or the SE, DEFRA exempt model. You will need to purchase the SE if you live in a smoke control area. This is an area where you cannot emit smoke from a chimney unless you are burning smokeless fuels and wood or if you are using an exempt appliance, such as the Hobbit SE. If you’re unsure as to whether you live in a smoke control area or not, then it’s worth contacting your local council to find out more.

The compact size of the Hobbit SE also allows for any ornate period features of an older cast iron fire surround to be retained, enabling an inefficient open fire to be replaced with ease. Our small stove continues to provide the unmistakable warmth and glow of a crackling fire, which sits at the heart of every home. This can be viewed through the Hobbit SE’s clear glass pane thanks to our Airwash and clean burning technology.

The Hobbit SE’s excellent performance combined with its traditional, yet elegant styling, and its superb value for money, has led to our little stove finding its home in countless amazing small spaces and tiny homes. Our small stoves have provided light and warmth to canal boats, treehouses, yurts, bell tents, glamping pods, campervan conversions, horse boxes, shepherds’ huts, garden rooms, summer houses, luxury cabins and retreats, workshops, caravans, vardo wagons and more! We’ve also designed a range of different flue kits which make it easy to install our small stoves in almost any of these spaces, and almost all of our high quality flue parts are manufactured by Midtherm.

The Hobbit SE comes in a matte black colour as standard. However, our stove is sure to compliment any style of decor or interior design, as we offer a broad range of additional stove options as well as the unique ability to customise your stove with your own choice of colours.

FAQ's

  • What's the difference between the Hobbit stove and the Hobbit SE?

Both stoves have exactly the same measurements, and they offer the same features. There are just a few key differencebetween the two:
    1. The SE stands for Smoke Exempt, and it is the DEFRA exempt model of our stove that can be used to burn wood in Smoke Control Areas here in the UK. You can find out if you live in one of these areas by contacting your local council.
    2. The SE has a small, constant supply of air going into the firebox of the stove. This is to comply with regulations, and it just means that the SE is slightly harder to shut down overnight, as it will burn the fuel slightly quicker. We do not recommend shutting the stove down for prolonged periods of time, as this will lead to more soot or tarry deposits forming in the flue.
    3. The SE can be installed into a 5″ or a 6″ chimney liner, whereas the standard stove can only operate with a 6″ liner. This mainly applies to household chimney installations here in the UK. If you reside in an older property which has a narrow chimney, then you may find that you need to purchase the SE model so that you can use a 5″ liner.

Our Hobbit Stove Has Been Fitted!

"We had a Hobbit stove fitted this week by Alex Reay from Flues and Fires, and I just wanted to get in touch to say it is AMAZING and we love it! We have a lovely cast iron tiled fireplace which I was desperate not to lose when we installed a small wood burning stove, but until I found the Hobbit on Google, everyone told me it would be impossible to keep the fire surround. The Hobbit is perfect - not only does it fit very snugly, but it looks fantastic and the blue door complements the tiles very nicely. We are sitting enjoying a fire now and absolutely loving it! Thanks for creating such an amazing product."

The Best Stove Ever!

"It’s the best stove ever! It’s easy to light, very efficient, burns anthracite and stays in overnight (ours has been in for three weeks now). It even keeps a kettle of water at the ready for a cuppa! What more can I say, we love it! Just the thing to make our Yorkshire home cosy, and the cat loves it too!"

First Small Stove Installation

Was looking for a small stove for my first self-install. Found Mark very helpful. Knowledgeable, friendly service. Stove burns well and generates lots more heat than the previous open fire. What is not to like?

A Huge Thank You!

"Dear Mark and Gill, a huge thank you for designing and making the Hobbit stove! We had two different London-based fireplace companies tell us that we simply had to knock out the old cast iron and tile fireplace to fit in a woodburning stove, and that there was no other option! Then we found you online. We are delighted with our little Hobbit, which swallows up logs and kicks out a good amount of heat. Perfect for the winter! I will also be writing to the London-based fireplace companies to put the Hobbit on their radar. Best wishes."

The Little Hobbit Has Stepped Up To The Challenge!

"We just wanted to say how impressed and how much of a life saver our little Hobbit has been! It was fitted a few months ago in our holiday home in Rhu, Scotland, which is a large open plan conversion in a Victorian house. This weekend our boiler decided it was not going to play ball. The little Hobbit has stepped up to the challenge, providing heat to a very large area, about twenty eight foot by twenty four foot with a high ceiling of about eighteen foot, keeping the room reasonably warm, warm enough for us not to use cardigans!”

Our Pride And Joy!

Fantastic!

"Just to bid you all a Happy New Year and to say how much we’re enjoying having our Hobbit stove! It was easy to fit with the help of your excellent ‘how to’ videos and we’re just awaiting our inspection by building control for the certification. The Hobbit has fitted neatly into the hearth vacated by the old gas back boiler (with a little cosmetic rendering) and never ceases to surprise us how much heat it can deliver to the point that the new condenser boiler is having an easy life, thereby saving us on gas bills too! Everyone loves having a ‘real fire’ in the living room."
