Easy Installation & Expert Advice
When it comes to installing your small stove in a garden room, shed or summerhouse, it’s still just as important to adhere to the fitting parameters outlined in the Approved Document J. If the small wood burner is going to be sited near combustibles, you will need to check our clearances. You will need to place the stove on a 12mm thick non-combustible hearth, with at least 225mm of hearth extending from the front of the stove and 150mm each side.
You will also get an installation guide when you receive the flue kit, and we have lots of helpful posts on installation. We also offer a free bespoke flue consultancy with our flue technician. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us!

What’s the difference between a DEFRA approved stove and an Eco Design stove?
Eco Design stoves have to comply with stricter limits on the amount of particulates and gases that get released by the stove. Both The Hobbit Stove and Hobbit SE are Eco Design stoves.
-
What’s the difference between the Hobbit Stove and the Hobbit SE?
Both stoves have exactly the same measurements, and they offer the same features. There are just a few key differences between the two:- The SE stands for Smoke Exempt, and it is the DEFRA exempt model of our stove that can be used to burn wood in Smoke Control Areas here in the UK. You can find out if you live in one of these areas by contacting your local council.
- The SE has a small, constant supply of air going into the firebox of the stove. This is to comply with regulations, and it just means that the SE is slightly harder to shut down overnight, as it will burn the fuel slightly quicker. We do not recommend shutting the stove down for prolonged periods of time, as this will lead to more soot or tarry deposits forming in the flue.
- The SE can be installed into a 5″ or a 6″ chimney liner, whereas the standard stove can only operate with a 6″ liner. This mainly applies to household chimney installations here in the UK. If you reside in an older property which has a narrow chimney, then you may find that you need to purchase the SE model so that you can use a 5″ liner.
-
What are the hearth requirements?
You will need to place your Hobbit on a non-combustible hearth with a minimum of 12mm depth, extending 225mm from the front of the stove and 150mm each side.
-
How much does the stove weigh?
The Hobbit stove and the Hobbit SE both weigh 50kg, or 110lbs.
-
Can I install a wood burning stove in a garden room, shed or summerhouse?
Yes, a wood burning stove can be safely installed into these spaces, provided the correct flue system, heat shielding and clearances are used. A dedicated stove kit makes installation easier by including the essential components required for a small space installation. The installation can be done by a professional, but you can also choose to do it yourself.

Do I need an AD cowl?
If your shepherd’s hut is surrounded by trees or other buildings, then there might not be a consistent flow of air across the top of your flue. On stormy days you might experience down draught problems, where the flue draw momentarily stops. This can potentially lead to smoke being blown back into the stove. To eliminate this, the rain cap which is included in this shepherd’s hut flue kit can be swapped for an anti-down draught cowl.
