Product description
Why Choose the Hobbit Stove for a Shepherd’s Hut
A shepherd’s hut requires a compact and efficient heating solution. The Hobbit SE stove is specifically designed for small spaces and produces between 3kW and 5.6kW of heat, with an average heat output of 4.1kW, making it ideal for shepherd huts!
-
Compact footprint for small interiors
-
Efficient wood burning heat output
-
Optional heatshields for reduced clearances
-
Suitable for off-grid living and glamping huts
We also offer a variety of stove extras to complement our small wood burning stove for a shepherd’s hut, which you can choose to add to your order. The side and rear heatshields are a very popular option to reduce the distance to combustibles in a small space, such as a shepherd’s hut. Or if you like the idea of having the option to do some wood-fired cooking, you can choose the stainless steel cooktop with a rear flue wedge, which will allow you to utilise the whole stovetop!
Installing a Stove in a Shepherd’s Hut
We have designed several shepherd’s hut stove flue kits, and our Shepherd’s Hut Flue Kit 1 in a black powder coated finish is included in this special offer. The flue parts in this shepherd’s hut flue kit have been designed to exit straight up through the roof of your shepherd’s hut, which is the most straightforward and affordable way to install our tiny stove in your small space. By having single wall flue inside your shepherd’s hut, you will benefit from the additional heat that is released from the single wall flue as the flue gases exit through your roof.
We have a helpful guide on how to install a stove in a shepherd’s hut here. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us! We also offer a free bespoke flue consultancy with our flue technician.
FAQ’s
Can I install a wood burning stove in a shepherd’s hut?
Yes, a wood burning stove can be safely installed in a shepherd’s hut provided the correct flue system, heat shielding and clearances are used. A dedicated shepherd’s hut stove kit makes installation easier by including the essential components required for a small hut installation. The installation can be done by a professional, but you can also choose to do it yourself.
Do I need an AD cowl?
If your shepherd’s hut is surrounded by trees or other buildings, then there might not be a consistent flow of air across the top of your flue. On stormy days you might experience down draught problems, where the flue draw momentarily stops. This can potentially lead to smoke being blown back into the stove. To eliminate this, the rain cap which is included in this shepherd’s hut flue kit can be swapped for an anti-down draught cowl.
Do I need the Direct Air Intake System?
The direct air intake system can be a great option to have installed on your shepherd’s hut log burner. Depending on how small your hut is, what can sometimes happen is a lack of air getting to the stove. This system allows outside primary air to be piped directly into the firebox of your stove, therefore improving the draw of your stove and flue system, promoting more efficient burning, as well as a higher room temperature.

What’s the difference between a DEFRA approved stove and an Eco Design stove?
Eco Design stoves have to comply with stricter limits on the amount of particulates and gases that get released by the stove. Both The Hobbit Stove and Hobbit SE are Eco Design stoves.
-
What’s the difference between the Hobbit Stove and the Hobbit SE?
Both stoves have exactly the same measurements, and they offer the same features. There are just a few key differences between the two:- The SE stands for Smoke Exempt, and it is the DEFRA exempt model of our stove that can be used to burn wood in Smoke Control Areas here in the UK. You can find out if you live in one of these areas by contacting your local council.
- The SE has a small, constant supply of air going into the firebox of the stove. This is to comply with regulations, and it just means that the SE is slightly harder to shut down overnight, as it will burn the fuel slightly quicker. We do not recommend shutting the stove down for prolonged periods of time, as this will lead to more soot or tarry deposits forming in the flue.
- The SE can be installed into a 5″ or a 6″ chimney liner, whereas the standard stove can only operate with a 6″ liner. This mainly applies to household chimney installations here in the UK. If you reside in an older property which has a narrow chimney, then you may find that you need to purchase the SE model so that you can use a 5″ liner.
-
What are the hearth requirements?
You will need to place your Hobbit on a non-combustible hearth with a minimum of 12mm depth, extending 225mm from the front of the stove and 150mm each side.
-
How much does the stove weigh?
The Hobbit stove and the Hobbit SE both weigh 50kg, or 110lbs.
