The Hobbit Stove For Glamping & HETAS Glamping Guidance
Over the past 10 years we have seen a rapid continual growth in the glamping industry and small spaces movement. This unique type of accommodation is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in nature and the outdoors, do some off-grid cooking and spend quality time with your favourite people away form the hustle and bustle of everyday life. It is quite rare to see glamping accommodation without a wood burning stove nowadays! When we designed our small Hobbit stove, our driving force was to manufacture a cast iron stove which boasts efficiency, affordability and for it to be small enough to be versatile to install within all small spaces, with particular focus on the glamping industry.
Mark, our wonderful founder, has years of unwavering knowledge when it comes to all things glamping – from designing and founding his own bell tent company, to installing the Hobbit stove into a vast array of small spaces. The design of our small stoves has been perfected to suit bell tents, shepherds huts, cabins, tiny homes, vans and all sorts of other magical small spaces people are creating! Our Hobbit Stove and Little Range have been meticulously designed to be your perfect heating solution for any glamping accommodation.
In June 2024 HETAS attended the Installer Show and we are very proud that they chose our Hobbit stove to display on their stand – which was a real talking point! HETAS have guidance for the glamping and luxury accommodation industry, and how to safely to install and maintain your wood burning stove. Read the full document here. We have extracted some key points from the HETAS guidance for you below, and how our stoves are glamping friendly!
Working with your space
When you are working with a much smaller space, you have to carefully think about each item and where it will be positioned. Having the ability to have a wood burning stove in a small space is a luxury, so finding one that safely fits can be tricky! Our Hobbit measures 465mm x 302mm x 355mm making it the ideal size for your small space.
Clearances and Efficiency
All three of our stoves have undergone vigorous testing at the UK’s leading testing unit, to ensure that they are safe for the use in smaller spaces. As long as you keep your small wood burning stove at least 400mm away from any combustible material from the sides and 450mm from the back you’ll have nothing to worry about! See our clearances document here for a detailed explanation. We have several options when it comes to decreasing the size of the distance you can have your stove to combustibles, our heatshields being the most effective, decreasing the distance to 150mm from the side and 100mm from the back.
Hearth
Your small wood burning stove is going to need some sort of platform or plinth to provide it with a flat, even and sturdy base for it to sit on made from non-combustible material that’s at least 12mm thick, 225mm of room from the front of your stove to the front of your hearth and at least 150mm of hearth space at either side of your small wood stove. Our enclosure is the perfect option to solve all of the above:
- Includes a built-in 12mm thick hearth.
- Airflow holes positioned around the base of the enclosure improve convection, helping to circulate warm air around your space.
- The sturdy steel construction of the enclosure acts as an anchoring point for your flue system when supporting the flue is difficult e.g. in a yurt or tent. The stove and the enclosure are connected via a support brace, which bolts between the enclosure and the rear flue wedge.
- The enclosure can also act as a safety shield around your stove to stop anything from falling onto the stove.
